Just-in-time cargo retrieval streamlines handling process
(17th November 2006, Hong Kong:) Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has recently rolled out a new initiative that streamlines the cargo pick up procedure for freight forwarders and truckers who collect unitised cargo at SuperTerminal 1. This new service initiative advances the cargo retrieval process to the time when freight forwarders or truckers present their shipment release information at the Hactl truck control office for truck dock allocation, well before entry into the terminal building. Prior to this, Hactl staff sent a cargo retrieval command to the computer system to trigger the order processing at the Container Storage System, where pallets and units are stored, at the time when freight forwarders present their shipment release form at the service counters inside the terminal building.

Advancing the cargo retrieval order also enables Hactl's computer system to process the shipment release command in tandem with the assignment of the truck dock for freight forwarders and truckers. This synchronisation of truck dock assignment with the cargo retrieval process facilitates just-in-time transfer of pallets and units from the Container Storage System to the truck dock assigned to the freight forwarders and truckers, thereby enhancing overall handling efficiency.

The advancement of the cargo retrieval order is the latest to add to an array of initiatives that Hactl offers to the industry to streamline import cargo release process. Since the beginning of this year, Hactl has implemented an improved set of import cargo service standards based on Actual Time of Arrival (ATA) of inbound flights, enabling the company to better service the industry on a just-in-time basis. Pre-arrival Customs Clearance service (PACCO) is yet another value-adding initiative that helps the industry to shorten cargo collection time at SuperTerminal 1. Under PACCO, cargo agents can authorise Hactl to conduct customs clearance prior to cargo collection, thereby expediting their cargo collection processes.

Mr. Kenneth Bell, Director, Service Delivery of Hactl said, "Being a major player in the airfreight and logistics industry, Hactl needs to take the lead to streamline our cargo handling processes, driving efficiency gains within the logistics chain. The latest initiative to advance the cargo retrieval order underlines our determination to constantly improve our performance, and we will continue to drive and roll out new initiatives which add value to our customers and business partners."
